How Does IPL Photofacial Work?

Intense, broad-spectrum visible light target different types of pigment-producing cells beneath the skin's surface. As this light energy converts into heat within the deeper dermal layers, unwanted pigment-producing cells are heated and destroyed. The body then naturally reabsorbs these cells, dispersing uneven pigment and revealing a more even skin tone.

This makes IPL Photofacial an effective treatment for concerns such as:

  • Brown spots

  • Broken capillaries

  • Sun spots

  • Freckles

  • Rosacea

Long-Term Anti-Aging Benefits

Beyond rejuvenating blotchy, sun-damaged skin, research shows that consistent IPL treatments can also help reverse visible signs of aging over time. Studies have found that just two to three photofacial sessions per year can prompt older skin cells to behave more like younger skin cells at the genetic level.

The heat energy delivered during treatment also penetrates into the dermis, stimulating natural collagen production. Over time, this results in a visible improvement in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

IPL is not recommended for every skin type

A highly versatile procedure, IPL Photofacial can be used to address pigment, sun damage, and visible signs of aging across many areas of the body. The most commonly treated areas include:

  • Face

  • Neck

  • Chest/Décolleté

  • Hands

  • Arms

  • Legs

  • Shoulders

Who Is a Good Candidate for IPL Photofacial?

IPL Photofacial isn't the right fit for everyone. Because of how the treatment works, patients with lighter skin tones (Fitzpatrick skin types I–III) typically respond best. Patients with darker skin tones are at higher risk of developing unwanted pigmentation changes and should proceed with added caution.

During your in-person consultation, our experienced staff will assess your skin type and tone to determine whether IPL Photofacial is a safe and effective option for you. If IPL isn't the best fit for your skin, we'll recommend alternative treatments better suited to your needs.

Areas We Treat with IPL Photofacial

What to Expect Before, During, and After Your IPL Photofacial

Before your treatment begins, you'll be provided with protective eyewear to shield your eyes from the bright flashes of light. Your laser specialist will guide the IPL handpiece across your skin, applying brief pulses of light to the treatment area.

Most patients experience minimal discomfort during an IPL Photofacial, often describing the sensation as a gentle rubber band snap against the skin. Treatment length depends on the number of areas being treated, the size of each area, and the number of passes required. Most sessions can be completed within an hour — which is why IPL Photofacial is sometimes called the "lunchtime facial." You'll receive a more accurate time estimate during your in-person consultation.

What Happens After IPL Photofacial Treatment?

Downtime after an IPL Photofacial is minimal. Your skin may appear slightly red and feel warm to the touch immediately after treatment, but makeup can be applied to cover this right away.

After your first treatment, dark spots may temporarily appear darker or develop a light crust during the first week. This is a normal part of the healing process and can also be covered with light makeup. By the end of the first week, you'll typically begin to see and enjoy visible results.

Sun Protection Is Essential After Treatment

Protecting your skin from sun exposure after IPL Photofacial is critical. We recommend avoiding direct sun and applying sunscreen consistently for at least the first week following treatment. Sunburn or sun overexposure can cause dark spots to recur, especially while your skin is healing.

Long-Term Results

Results from IPL Photofacial continue to improve over time, with optimal results typically visible about three months after your final treatment. After completing an initial course of three treatments, we recommend annual follow-up sessions to help maintain your results.
