There are a lot of things that we can be self-conscious about—acne, crooked teeth, thin lips, bony hands, thick thighs, cankles, thinning hair, the list goes on and on. The thing about insecurities is that they are different from person to person. While you may hate your bushy eyebrows, someone else may look at you and wish they had the same eyebrows. As sad as it is, there are many things that each and every person does not like about themselves.

But there are a few things that a majority of people don’t like and are insecure about. One of those things is a double chin. There may be a few people out there would don’t mind having a double chin or don’t feel insecure about it, but for the rest, it is something they wish they could get rid of day after day. And now they can.

Kybella®  is a newer treatment, approved by the FDA in 2015. SInce then, is has become an international treatment that helps people get rid of one of their biggest insecurities. Nuderma Health & Med Spa is one location in the North Carolina area that offers this treatment.

So, what exactly is Kybella? In this blog, we will go over everything you need to know about the treatment that reduces chin fat. Read on to learn more and to find out if you are a good candidate for Kybella.

What is Kybella?

Kybella works by using deoxycholic acid as its active ingredient. Deoxycholic acid is naturally made by the body and works to destroy fat cells. These non-surgical injections use this acid to target the fat cells in the chin and neck area. Deoxycholic acid breaks down and absorbs fat, destroying fat cells. Dr. Naomi McCullum, who was interviewed by Beauty Crew, put it simply: once fat cells are destroyed the can no longer store or accumulate fat.

What Can Kybella Treat?

Initially, Kybella was designed to treat neck fat and double chins. It was approved by the FDA for that purpose, but according to the Beauty Crew article, some doctors are using it “off-label” in other areas of the body that accumulate fate, such as love handles. At Nuderma Health & Med Spa, we use Kybella as it was meant to be used, but offer other treatments that can work on different areas of fat, including Smartlipo Triplex and Precision TX®. In an FDA news release, they state that Kybella is only approved for treatment under the chin, which is something we follow when doing treatments.

What Can You Expect During a Treatment?

Although this treatment is a non-surgical injection, it can be painful. But numbing creams and local anesthesia can be used to help make patients more comfortable. This is a quick treatment, unlike other non-surgical fat reduction treatments. Often referred to as the “lunchtime neck lift”, patients can return to work after the treatment if desired. This is a quick and easy injection treatment that allows you to get rid of your under chin fat.

After the treatment, your neck may be sore for a few days after. And while the treatment can help get rid of under chin fat, the area treated may initially look worse. Swelling or bruising may occur before the neck begins to show its desired results. We encourage our patients to be patient when looking for results.

What Are the Results?

After the swelling and bruising heals, patients will begin to see their desired results. The results are a more defined chin, a reduction in the appearance of a double chin, and less fat in the chin and neck area.

This non-surgical treatment offers varying results and largely depends on the amount of fat a patient has under their chin. A patient can receive up to six treatments with a month separation between each treatment. While not every patient will need six Kybella treatments, more treatments will offer better results, and Dr. Stephen Spencer will determine how many you need for the best and desired results.

Who Is a Good Candidate?

Just like any medical treatment, Kybella is not a treatment for everyone. Are you a candidate? An article from Potomac Plastic Surgery, mentions that those who have received prior neck surgery must be more cautious with Kybella, but may not be able to receive the treatment at all. These neck surgeries include a face lift, neck lift, or neck liposuction. Someone may also not be a candidate for Kybella if chin fullness is from something other than fat. This includes a small chin bone or loose neck skin. Having an infection in the chin or neck area would disqualify candidates of Kybella. Women who are pregnant or lactating are also not candidates for Kybella.

For some, liposuction may be a better treatment option than Kybella. Kybella is simply an alternative to liposuction, not a replacement. While kybella can help to destroy fat cells in the neck region, there are things it can’t improve. Excess skin, sagging muscle, and a weak chin bone may result in the appearance of a double chin, but since this double chin is not caused by fat, Kybella can’t fix these problems. If your chin has one of these problems, a chin implant or a facelift will be a better treatment options.

While you may not be able to tell whether or not you are a good candidate for Kybella, Dr. Spencer can.
