CO2 Laser Resurfacing: What to Expect Before, During, and After

If you've tried serums, facials, and at-home devices but still aren't seeing the results you want for fine lines, acne scars, sun damage, or uneven texture, CO2 laser resurfacing might be the treatment that finally gets you there. It's one of the most effective skin resurfacing options available today — and also one of the most misunderstood. Here's what you need to know before booking a consultation.
What Is CO2 Laser Resurfacing?
CO2 (carbon dioxide) laser resurfacing uses short, concentrated pulses of light to remove damaged outer layers of skin while simultaneously heating the deeper layers. This dual action does two things at once: it clears away the surface skin that shows sun damage, scarring, and texture irregularities, and it stimulates collagen production underneath, which continues to firm and smooth the skin for months after treatment.
It's considered an ablative laser treatment, meaning it works on the skin's surface rather than just beneath it. That's part of why it delivers more dramatic results than gentler options like IPL or Clear + Brilliant — and also why it requires a longer recovery period.
What Can CO2 Laser Resurfacing Treat?
This treatment is popular because it addresses several concerns in a single session:
Fine lines and wrinkles, especially around the eyes and mouth
Acne scars and other textural scarring
Sun damage, including age spots and uneven pigmentation
Enlarged pores
Overall skin laxity and dullness
Many patients choose CO2 resurfacing specifically because it can address multiple issues at once, rather than needing separate treatments for texture, tone, and firmness.
What to Expect During Treatment
Before your session, your provider will apply a topical numbing agent to keep you comfortable. The laser is then passed over the treatment area in a controlled pattern, with the intensity adjusted based on your skin type, goals, and how deep the treatment needs to go. Most sessions take between 30 and 90 minutes, depending on the size of the area being treated and whether you're doing a full-face or targeted treatment.
You'll feel warmth during the procedure, and your skin will look and feel similar to a sunburn immediately afterward — pink or red, with some swelling in the first day or two.
Recovery: What Downtime Really Looks Like
This is the part that surprises people most, so it's worth being upfront about it. CO2 resurfacing does involve real downtime, typically 5 to 10 days depending on the intensity of your treatment:
Days 1–3: Skin is red, swollen, and may ooze slightly. Think of it as a controlled wound that's healing.
Days 3–7: Skin begins to peel and flake as the old layer sheds.
Days 7–14: New, pink skin is visible underneath. Redness fades gradually and can be covered with mineral makeup once healing allows.
Your provider will send you home with specific aftercare instructions, usually including gentle cleansing, a healing ointment, and strict sun avoidance. Following these closely isn't optional — it's what determines how smooth your results turn out and helps prevent complications like infection or pigment changes.
How Long Do Results Last?
Because CO2 resurfacing prompts your body to build new collagen, results continue improving for two to three months after treatment and can last for years, especially with good sun protection and skincare in between. Many patients find that one session provides significant, long-lasting improvement, though some choose a second treatment for deeper concerns like advanced scarring.
Is CO2 Laser Resurfacing Right for You?
CO2 resurfacing tends to be a great fit for people who:
Want noticeable, longer-lasting results rather than incremental improvement
Can plan for about a week of downtime
Are dealing with more than one concern (texture, tone, and fine lines together)
Have realistic expectations about the healing process
It may not be the right first step for everyone — skin type, medical history, and current skincare routine all factor into whether ablative resurfacing or a gentler option makes more sense. That's exactly why a consultation matters.
